Changelog

Jun 17, 2009

Since I've upgraded my desktop to a new iMac, my old Dual G5 Power Mac is now the primary server for Leinninger.com, Brat-Patrol.com, and other hosted sites. There may be some oddities for a little while as I complete the migration, but so far, it was fairly painless.

I noticed that the webcam images in the right hand column were taking a while to render, causing the rest of the page to stall before completing. I rearranged the columns in the code and updated the CSS so the rest of the page would render before trying to build-out the right-column.

Google is hosting our email and extended apps. This keeps me from worrying every time there's a power or network outage in my area. It also give my family faster account access and many more features than when everything was hosted on my local server. Websites and applications still reside on my OS X server.

I've added the ability for multiple users to add news, updates, and even changelog entries (which you're reading now). This means we should be seeing updates from Gina soon!

Since I'm already a .Mac subscriber, I've switched my moblog to use that service. There are no limits apart from total storage... which at my current pace should not be maxed out for some time. The old moblog is still available on Flickr.

back
Feb 29, 2008

I've added a Twitter status widget to the sidebar. I've also added a new cam item to the webcam module: the basement project. You'll be able to watch us when we're working and monitor our progress.

I've managed to edit and link my travel log from our recent trip to Hawaii. There are plenty of links a the .Mac gallery of photos from the vacation.

Apart from a drive failure over a year ago, this server has been running very well. We updated our electrical system in the house from 80 amps to 200 with a dedicated circuit for the server rack. This has allowed interference-free X10 communication as well as more stable power levels for the server and external drives. An external Network Attached Storage (NAS) device has been added to take care of video and music sharing and distribution on the internal network rather than placing the workload on the physical server.

I'll be moving the homepage over to a more blog/dashboard oriented design shortly. I haven't written an article in some time and I think a lot use would come out of having recent blog updates, flickr images, etc. on the homepage. You should see the changes trickle through soon.

I've finally hooked up one of the cameras at our new house. It points our my office window on the second floor into the
front yard. You can't see much, but it's a start.

I've added a bit of logic to break the
news info page into 10-record chunks. You can still get the whole news update page by clicking on the "View All" link at the top.

I like Google... a lot. I use their
maps, their stats, and just about eveerything else they give away. I've recently added Google AdSense. The ads you see on the site should be related to the content on the site.

Leechers beware. If you try to leech images from my site, you might get a nasty surprise! Some unfortunate myspace.com users thought it would be nice to steal images of Steve-O, Surfers, and Gorillas... now they're seeing a nasty mod_rewrite trick:
Link not for the faint of heart...

The
moblog now creates a latest image thumbnail on the fly. This was needed as my new Treo 650 does not capture picture below 320x200. So, I figured I would moblog at 640x480, and store a thumbnail on the local server for fast display in the moblog module. The moblog checks if the date of the RSS is newer than that of the thumbnail. If so, it updates the thumbnail from the latest image in the Flickr XML. Speaking of XML, the old RSS parser that I was useing was TEH SUCK. So, I've switched to one that I wrote a while back. It converts XML into nice PHP arrays. I'll be converting the moblog page to one of my own design when time allows.

The randomcam is back after a brief outage to to hardware issues.

The SMS module on the homepage is working again as well. I have switched cellular providers, and the new service is much better.

For some time, there have been issues displaying floating items within the main content area of this site. This has been corrected.

Leinninger.com has been migrated to a
new server:

In addition to the previous tasks (home control, media hosting, web services, ldap, email, webcams) it also acts as a primary Windows domain controller for the few remaining XP machines on the Leinninger.com network.

I've posted the first of a 4-part article. I've detailed my recent experiments with a few computer-based home media solutions. This is my first multi part article, and has made me consider dedicating an entire website to home automation and audio/video integration.

Yup. The template and CSS stuff for etcetera has been updated.

My old dual-500 mhz G4 tower will soon be re-purposed as a server, replacing a 7-year old 333 mhz G3. Tasty.

I finally went through and debugged my PHP code (Etcetera is PHP-based). Several errors and notices were caused by the recent PHP version upgrade... but many were do to just plain-old bad code. My fault.

The mail server/mail db used by OS X Server 10.2 seems to slow down with size. I'm hoping to clean it up soon and possibly even get 10.3 server installed.

Yup... you read it right. There's finally a new article on the homepage. It's mostly about my hobbies... It's a sure-fire cure for insomnia!

I was oblivious to an apparently long-standing issue with the article archive links (left-hand column, homepage). When I set up the site to accept non-query based URIs, I broke the DB requests for the archive links. My bad.

back
Jan 09, 2004
The gallery is now in place.
Check it out!.

The previously convoluted URIs are now much easier. I'll gradually convert all of the in-site navigation to the new (shorter, easier) address scheme.

back
Jan 07, 2004
I'm slowly re-working the gallery system for viewing images. I need something more automated. The
new system is much better. Check out the beta.

It's nice to be surprised... like finding a dollar in your pocket... or the doggie bag from your favorite restaurant in the fridge the next morning. I forgot that during the holidays, the Etcetera logo and background get a special treatment. Cool.

back
Oct 28, 2003
in the grand tradition of following
George, I've added Nice Titles to my main navigation menu (on the left side of the site).

The Leinninger.com server has been the target of several much needed upgrades. The RAM has been doubled, a better network card (more reliable) has been installed, and a video-in interface has been added for the cameras. As a result, the
Randomcam is back online. A script has not been created to switch camera sources on a timer... yet... but I will be working on in the future.

While attending
Wayne State University, studying Interdisciplinary Electronic Art, I created The Freakshow. It's an amusing collection of distractions made with Quicktime VR and Shockwave (with Lingo). Keep in mind this was all done around 1997. It was all quite cutting edge at the time. Enjoy.

I just found out about a very cool legacy meta tag... the "ICBM" meta tag. Basically, it's your latitude and longitude as a carry-over from the arpanet military network strategy. It's used by
GeoURL to physically locate your site in relationship to others. What's near this site?

If you're not using Netscape (Safari is o.k., though), you can see our wedding countdown timer at the bottom of each page.

Jul 15, 2003
After nine months, I've finally written a new
article. I haven't ranted about Macs in a while... so here it comes... enjoy.

back
Jul 04, 2003
I've finished the admin tool for the site. It lets me add, update, and delete news, changelog entries, and articles. If the spirit moves me, I'll try to write a new article soon.

back
Jul 03, 2003
Since the migration to
OS X Server there have been no unexpected outages or failures. The server is running 15 degrees cooler than the previous one and makes 1/10th the noise. I'll add a real Xserve to my wish list.

back
Jun 03, 2003
I've moved Leinninger.com to a "new" server. The old server (dual Pentium Pro Compaq Proliant w/ SCSI RAID and tons of ram) suffered from over-heating that surely would have worsened in the summer. The new server is an older Macintosh G3 (~333 MHz, 315 megs of ram, Fast SCSI-2) running
OS X Server 10.2. So far I'm thoroughly impressed.

back
Mar 19, 2003
A wireless version of this site is available at
http://wap.leinninger.com/. The latest news and changes are viewable on most WAP-enabled wireless devices.

back
Mar 13, 2003
The old articles are back! By popular demand, I've gotten off my duff and converted the old archives to the new database system. An archive menu is available from all article pages (including the homepage). Check out the left-hand column, beneath the main menu.

back
Mar 06, 2003
I've tweaked the CSS for the left-hand menu. It should look nice in any browser now. Gecko-based (Netscape) and KHTML-based (Safari, Konqueror) browsers like to add border-width and padding to the outside of a "div" tag's defined width, rather than include it in the total width (as I.E. does). Borders, padding, and margins should be handled the same way in "divs" that they are in "table" elements. <sigh>

I've also fixed the printer-friendly article viewer. The entire content of the article now appears on one page for easy printing.

Finally, I've fixed a small glitch that made the header and footer appear more wide than the content area of each page. My bad. I set a "colspan" of 5 even though there are only 3 columns in the main layout table. D'oh!

back
Feb 25, 2003
The system goes down for maintenance very early in the morning every day to avoid the issues we've had with memory overflow. Once the new RAM is installed, the maintenance schedule will lighten up.

back
Feb 05, 2003
There is now a link to
Rogerbox merchandise in the left-hand menu. The photos from our first show (with lineup #2) are up now, too. When I have a chance, I'll write some info on the current status of the band. The official site is still there, but I haven't finished it yet. (I got started, then we re-arranged the band.)

The Voice XML for "Tell Me" has been updated to support the new database-driven news, updates, and articles. Call 1-800-TELL-ME and enter 1-DUANE at the prompt to access the voice menu. Access Etcetera News, Changelog, and Article updates over the phone.

Jan 31, 2003
The
Firebird and Impreza RS sections are in place. This means all of the car content is in place. I've added an updated (and improved) weather module to the right column of the homepage.

back
Jan 30, 2003
The
changelog archive and news archive are now functional. Older content is not available yet, but can be read on the old server.

back
Jan 28, 2003
I've set up a redirect on the old server to point to this one for the time being. Some of the old content still hasn't been migrated. Get it
here. Mind you, the old site will no longer be updated.

There a few issues remaining with the new server. For starters, it doesn't have enough RAM. Compaq buffered EDO ECC 168-pin DIMMs are hard to come by. If I find some, I'll be a happy man.

back
Jan 06, 2003
What's changed? Everything! The site is now database driven. There are new
zen entries, pet pictures. The new camera input card should be installed this week. Once completed, the entire transition to this primary server will be complete.

The new
Leinninger.com server is up and working well. It's a Compaq ProLiant with dual 200 mhz p-pro processors, 287m of ram, approx 200 gigs of ATA100 storage, a 6-drive RAID5 SCSI array, and a few other goodies. It should be very stable now (running Gentoo Linux) and easier to maintain and upgrade. This site is not hosted on Leinninger.com in it's entirety. The good peeps at The Collective keep things frosty right now. However, I'm hoping to move Etcetera to the Leinninger.com server(s) within the next 9 months.
